DIY Ombré Canvas Shoes

Posted on 09/05/12

Last weekend I got the sudden urge to jazz up my plain white canvas sneakers. Using some permanent colour markers and a few other tools found around the house, I created these awesome and one of a kind ombré beauties.
Here’s an easy and fun way to create your own ombré kicks.
What you’ll need:
  • Canvas shoes
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • A Bowl
  • A sponge
  • Your choice of colour permanent markers
  • Newspaper
Find a well ventilated work area (outside is a good option). Make sure to protect your work area by putting down some sheets of newspaper.
Step 2:
Prep your shoes by removing the laces to ensure that the ink won’t spread onto them.
Step 3:
Pour a generous amount of rubbing alcohol into a bowl.
Step 4:
Start colouring! Colour across the shoe -- one or two colors at a time (as the ink could dry permanently if you wait too long). Immediately drip the rubbing alcohol over the color. Use the sponge to soak up the alcohol from the bowl and then squeeze over the freshly coloured portion. The more rubbing alcohol, the more the ink will spread. Continue colouring and fading until the desired results are achieved.
Step 5:
Once you're all done, let them dry overnight. Once your shoes are completely dry, the ink will stop spreading.
